The New Zealand Contractors’ Federation ensures that the voices and views of members and the industry as a whole are heard when and where it counts. The Federation maintains close links with central and local government, and with all relevant industry organisations.

Government Representation
The Federation ensures that the industry's views are represented at all levels of government:
Links are maintained with Cabinet Ministers; Members of Parliament; Parliamentary Select Committees; political parties; and the following central government agencies:
- Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)
- Education Training and Support Agency: Industry training
- Ministry for the Environment: Environment policy
- Internal Affairs Department: Local Government
- Labour Department: Employment; Occupational Safety and Health; and Industrial Relations Services
- Police: Transport law enforcement
- Qualifications Authority: Industry qualifications
- Standards New Zealand: Establishing of common industry standards, including NZS 3910
- Transit New Zealand: Management of state highways
- Transport Ministry: Government transport policy

Local Government
The Federation ensures that the industry’s views are represented at local government. The Federation maintains links with local government because of their importance to contractors as a major user of their services, and also as a competitor in service delivery. National office is able to assist members in their dealings with councils at a local level. Close links are maintained with the national organisation of local government – Local Government New Zealand which has its national office in Wellington. Similar links are maintained with the Association of Local Government Engineers – Ingenium

Branch Meetings
You will be invited to attend regular branch meetings and social functions and will be able to serve on your local branch committee – which administers branch affairs and deals with local issues that don’t require referring to the national office. Branch meetings afford an opportunity for you to meet with fellow contractors.

Annual Conference
Each year you will receive an invitation to attend the Annual Conference to hear about and discuss issues of concern to contractors. You will decide on the business plan for the Federation and elect the Federation’s governing body – the Executive Council. You will also be able to enjoy the fellowship of other contractors attending the conference. If you cannot attend you will still be able to let someone vote for you by proxy.

Hirepool Construction Awards
As a member you are invited to enter the annual Hirepool Construction Awards which recognises excellence in the New Zealand construction industry. Information on the awards and application forms are sent out each year in April. Full details are available on our website

Shell People Awards
NZCF members are invited to enter their outstanding trainee or apprentice. The Award recognises excellence of individuals within the industry and to promote the Civil Construction industry as an attractive career option for school leavers

National Excavator Competition
Each year the Federation provides the opportunity, to excavator operators to compete for the national title of “best multi skilled excavator operator nation wide”. Competitions are held in each region with the national title being competed for at the Central Districts Field Days in Fielding in March. Prizes competed for change annually but generally have a value around $3000.00.

Education and Training
InfraTrain New Zealand provides qualifications from an introductory to management level in the following sectors; Civil and Roading Construction, Civil Engineering, Pavement Surfacing, Roadmarking, Rural Contracting, Agrichemical Application, Demolition, Drainlaying, Road Opening and Maintenance, Temporary Traffic Control, Water Reticulation, Forestry Earthworks, Bulk Earthmoving, Horizontal Directional Drilling, Surveying, Design, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Property Management and Business Administration.
Training is subsidised and based on practical performance. Through a combination of on-job training and off-job courses, trainees are able to gain the knowledge required to work safely and develop their skills in the workplace. Trainees with previous experience in the workplace can be assessed against unit standards in order to gain recognition of existing skills.
